Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

I saw Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer on Saturday night and I liked it. It was an enjoyable movie. Now I am one of those few people who did like the first Fantastic Four movie. This second one however was much better. The way they all interact together seems less forced. The Silver Surfer was great. He looked great. The one big problem with the movie for me was that Jessica Alba looked freaky. Her make-up and hair were just not right. And it made her look fake and I didn’t like the look. I think she looked better in the first movie. Michael Chiklis plays The Thing great. Now I can’t picture anyone else as The Thing.

My final verdict, I liked it. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is a good, fun movie.

The Plain Janes

MINX is DC Comics line of books for teenaged girls. Written by Cecil Castellucci with art by Jim Rugg, I think this book was a great starting point for the Minx line of comics. The book has received much mainstream press from the New York Time to Vanity Fair. Jane who is the protagonist is someone I can identify with. She wants to live, be different and have her own life. She is creative and that is what makes this comic work. The story took me back to school when people try to fit in so hard that all you want to do is be different and The Plain Janes are different, so different everyone wants to be part of the action. Although I am no longer a teenage girl I don’t feel as if I can’t read this book. It may be aimed at teenage girls but I think this book would be good for a person of any age. I am looking forward to picking up the rest of the books in the Minx line when they come out.

Mouse Guard: Fall 1152

I read Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 (Hardcover edition) in one sitting. I could not put it down. From the turn of the first page I was hooked. It's about mice, brave little creatures with big enemies. David Petersen's art is beautiful. The characters are unique in their own right and you can quickly attach yourself to them. You care about their cause and are sad when things don't go their way. I thought I was intrigued by the Guard, a organization of elite mice who look out for the rest. The book left me wanting to know more about the Guard and it's history. I highly recommend this book. It is a book for old or new fans of comics. It may also be one of the most perfect books to get someone who isn't into super-heroes into comics. The hardcover edition which I read collects the first 6-issues of Mouse Guard: Fall 1152. There is also 12 pages of bonus sketches. Now I am eagerly waiting to read the next installment in the Mouse Guard world which is supposed to be out in July 07.

Thank you Hellboy: Blood & Iron

I just picked up my copy of Hellboy: Blood & Iron from Best Buy where it came with a great Hellboy Animated action figure. But the reason for this post is that the DVD also came with a booklet. Well a comic and a chapter listing. Which is different now because most DVDs do not include anything. So kudos to the Hellboy Animated for releasing this DVD right.

Books With Pictures

Books With Pictures is going to be my ongoing project about the comic books, graphic novels and manga I read. I will also be starting a podcast. I know there are a few podcasts out there about comics by girls and Books With Pictures is getting ready to join them.

Look for the first podcast up sometime this weekend. Tomorrow, my review of Mouse Guard.
